Synopsis: The war veteran Kuzma Kuzmich Iordanov (Yuri Nikulin) does not work, drinks alcohol, makes up his living by doing some odd jobs. From time to time he is called up to the police station, where he gets shamed and threatened with some jail time because of his "parasitiс" lifestyle, but all that does not seem to bother him much. One day Kuzma Kuzmich hears about a young woman Natasha (Inna Gulaya) who as a one-year-old child was separated from her parents during World War II and has been unsuccessfully searching for them ever since. Kuzma Kuzmich gets the idea that by claiming to be Natasha's long-lost father he can secure a comfortable existence for himself - live at his newly found daughter's house, on her salary and not have to work. However, little does he know that by acquiring an honest, hard-working and loving daughter Kuzma Kuzmich will be deeply moved and begin to change himself and his lifestyle...
The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival.
