The movie tells us about a heroic battle for Dnepr river and
setting Kiev free from fascists. September of 1943.
Regiment under colonel Gulyaev command is assigned to
force a crossing over river Dnepr. Two battalions are to
penetrate the enemy rear and join battle in order to draw the
opponent. The troop train with ammunition was destroyed
by aircraft and the battalions left to the enemy rear equipped
very badly. The headquarters cancel the order and there is
no help for the battalions in the rear. The soldiers were
fighting to the death. Only five of them broke out of the
encirclement. Captain Ermakov was among them. When he
found out that the order was cancelled he abused the
division commander. He was arrested. The division crosses
the Dnepr river in other place and enters the city. Colonel
Iverzev thanks the soldiers and captain Ermakov is in the
commendation list.

In order to pay his murdered friend's debt and safe the life
of his wife by this, card player surnamed Grek arrives at
Moscow, resorts to a dishonest method, wins back the debt
from the card Mafia godfather. The deception is exposed
